Germantown Hills
Wastewater Treatment Facility

This is the Village of Germantown Hills official information regarding grinder pumps.  There may be other information on other links but it is important for you to know that this reflects the official Village position.

Dear Village Resident:

This letter is to inform you about something that you may not be aware of.  Your house because of the topography of the land was set up with a grinder pump as a part of the sewer system.  We are sending this notice so that you are aware of the grinder pump and to know what to do if you feel there is a problem.  We also want to tell you of a couple of things to keep in mind concerning your grinder pump system.

First, there is a red light located on the panel that is on the side of your house.  If it is on, this should be reported as soon as possible.  This light also needs to be visible at all times.  Many times we get calls from your neighbors that the light is on.  If the light is on you should refrain from using any water, call the Village Hall and follow the instructions on the recording to report a sewer concern. In addition, a resident may purchase an audible alarm that would be connected to the control box.  This would provide a noise along with the red light when there is a problem.  These alarms are an additional cost to the resident in the amount of $150.00, which is installed by the Village.  Please call the Sewer Plant at 383-4200 if you are interested in having an audible alarm installed or if you have additional questions.

Next, we need to be able to access the grinder pit.  Please do not plant any foliage close to the tank or build anything around the tank.  The Village maintains the grinder pump system and we need to be able to access the tank.

Please find enclosed a do’s and don’ts list that needs to be read and followed.  There are many items that should not be disposed of through the sewer system causing the grinder pump system to fail. A homeowner may be liable if there is apparent abuse.

Finally, be aware the standard homeowner's insurance policy does not cover very costly sewer or sump pump backups in homes.  Additional riders are available through your Insurance Company that would cover any backups. A battery operated floor alarm water sensor may offer additional protection.  Please call if you have any questions.

-Thank you.- Village of Germantown Hills
